Where is Fiji?

Fiji Islands is located in the south-west Pacific Ocean, about 3 hrs by plane north of New Zealand, and 3-4 hours north-west of Australia. It's nearest neighbours are Samoa and the Kingdom of Tonga to the east, and Vanuatu to the west. It is often called the crossroads of the South Pacific as it is central to main airline and ocean routes across the region. View a map of Fiji.

Geographical features

There are approximately 330 islands in the Fijian archipelago. The largest is known as Viti Levu, which means big (levu) Fiji (viti). Fijians are known as kai viti - people of Fiji (pronounced kye-veeti). On this main island is located the nation's capital city of Suva on the southern coastline, as well as Nadi in the west. Nadi International Airport is the main gateway for airline travel into and out of Fiji. The second and third largest islands are found to the north-west. These are Vanua Levu (big land) and Taveuni. Taveuni was nominated by Islands magazine in mid 2007 in its list of the world's "20 Best Islands to Live On". The fourth largest island is Kadavu in the southern group of islands. The larger islands are volcanic in origin. Some of the smaller islands and islets are limestone (coral) formation.
